Youngtimer Audi Quattro – Everyone Should Be Bond!

Youngtimer Audi Quattro – Everyone Should Be Bond!
It's unnecessary to explain why the Audi Quattro is considered a symbol of masculinity among youngtimers, but let's explore what makes it so charming!

The history of quattro technology dates back to the winter of 1976-77 when Audi engineers conducted test drives in deep snow in Sweden. During this testing, they compared prototypes with a military off-road vehicle called the Iltis. Although the Iltis had only 55 kW (75 hp) of power, it managed to outperform the much stronger Audi prototypes in snowy terrain. This experience led Audi engineers to develop quattro technology. They aimed to carve out an unbeatable vehicle from the Audi Quattro, and they succeeded!

The key solution was the hollow axle, which represented a drilled 263 mm (10.4 inches) secondary axle in the gearbox. This axle allowed power to flow in two directions: the center differential directed 50% of the power to the rear axle and the other half to the front axle. The advantage of the hollow axle was that it was relatively tension-free, lightweight, and compact, enabling efficient all-wheel drive without a heavy transfer case or secondary driveshaft.

1980: The Debut of the Audi Quattro
The significant introduction of quattro technology occurred in 1980 when the first-generation Audi Quattro was unveiled at the International Geneva Motor Show. This angular, sharp-edged, 147 kW (200 hp) coupe was originally designed for small series production, but due to customer interest, it went into mass production. The Audi Quattro remained in the model lineup until 1991 and symbolized Audi's sporty face. In 1984, Audi also presented the Sport Quattro, equipped with 225 kW (306 hp), making it a true racing car.

In 1986, Audi switched to the Torsen differential, which allowed for variable torque distribution, making the QUATTRO system even more dynamic. The Torsen technology could direct torque according to traction, ensuring outstanding stability and performance.

The Audi Quattro is a further development... and we got a new game!
Audi crowned the development of quattro with planetary gearing, offering asymmetric, dynamic power distribution. This provided better traction, stability, and greater performance for the vehicle. With this development, quattro became suitable not only for racetracks but also for everyday sporty driving. Thus, a generation quickly emerged that considered the roads a racetrack. Do you know them  ? :)

What is that thrill in our veins when we spot a youngtimer Audi Quattro?

The secret of quattro lies not only in the engineering marvel of its drivetrain. It's about passion, excitement, joy, nostalgia, desire, and, not to mention, we can perfectly identify with it because the Audi Quattro is masculine, sporty, and dynamic, just like us! The ability of the Audi Quattro to perform consistently and reliably in all conditions represents the identity of the Audi brand and its unmatched charm even today.
